Update: Pizza Oven

Posted by johngl

I’ve dressed up the pizza oven.

Backyard Pizza Oven

While still a prototype, I’ve added handles, brass hinges, a brass door latch, and some reinforcing around the opening. It certainly won’t win any beauty contests, but it does cook a fine pizza.

The handles include a thermal break (a felt made of rock wool) so they don’t get quite so hot.

For the doors, I’d considered all kinds of things including a wooden plug kind of thing so I could also use the unit as a smoker. When I looked over on the porch and saw the pieces of metal I’d removed for the opening, I decided to put them back in. It worked like a charm.

Looking in from the top…

Grate wings flip up!

one can easily see the pizza stones (also known as 8″x8″ unglazed quarry tile) that conveniently fit just between the grate’s wings. This makes it really easy to refuel if you’re hosting a pizza-making marathon.

My biggest problem thus far has been dealing with too much heat. My initial concerns about this thing not getting hot enough were entirely and completely unfounded. In fact, yesterday’s lunch pizza got a little charred on the 600°F tiles.

Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, and Ham pizza

Anyway, I’m calling this bugger done.

For now.

While not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, his family certainly ate well. According to his father, that was the whole point.
