Grow your own…meat?

posted by johngl

Since I’ve put in a hundred hour work-week, I didn’t get a chance to cook at all (and barely had any time to eat), so I was in a quandary as to what to post.  Luckily, a member of my crew (the best group of people ever) sent me this really strange post:

This thing takes absurdity to a whole new level.  The claim is that it will grow meat.

No joke.

The designer, a guy name Richard Hederstierna, calls this thing a Cocoon. He even won a prize for it. And $7,347.00. And an internship at a design center. I wish someone could give me that for designing a cookie jar (or is it a veggie steamer? Rice cooker?) and making wild claims about it.

Someone’s been watching too much Star Trek NG.

So, the weirdest part is that this sort of device is being touted as a possible solution to food shortages and that it will keep us humans from killing tasty animals. The contest sponsors, Electrolux, don’t even know if it’s possible to make it work.

Doesn’t Electrolux make vacuums?

Okay, so it’s supposed to work like this: Add one packet of animal muscle cells, nutrients, and oxygen. Add heat. Wait. Take out your meat.

They sell these little cellulose fiber things at the grocery store that look like vanilla wafers. You add water and they grow into a sponge.

Which do you think would taste better?

So, here’s an idea. Harvest animal cells from dead humans. Grow them in the Cocoon. It’s keeps Grandma from eating cat food, right? We’ll call it Soylent Green.

The Cocoon is missing a few things: two wheels and a hose.

The best things in life should be shared!
