Going out and having a burger is a national pastime.
According to Eric Schlosser, in his book Fast Food Nation, Americans eat 13 billion burgers a year. Based on a US population of about 307 million (US Census Bureau, July 2009), that is about 42 burgers per year for each and every one of us. Luckily, I probably eat about half of that unless I am burgering my way to Labor Day (as I was doing about this time last year). At least those were home made.
BFD. Get on with it man!
And so it came to pass that within a two week period, I had the same type of burger at two highly rated burger joints. In the left corner, weighing in at 650 stores across the country and originating in Virginia, Five Guys. In the right corner, weighing in at a mighty three stores and originating in Texas, Mighty Fine.

The past several weeks have involved a lot of travel for me so I haven’t had a lot of time to cook anything new and interesting. However, during one of my brief stints back in Austin, a friend phoned and we decided to get together at what is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to eat. The big win here is that it is close to home. It’s the Nanami Sushi Bar on Brodie Lane.
If you recall, this is the place where my most glorious spousal unit finally ate a piece of sashimi using chop sticks. There has been no stopping her since. We ordered the same dish again, just for fun.

This is a dish that the folks at Nanami call the Spice Girls. It’s hamachi (I think), topped with a round of jalapeño pepper and caviar.

At times, life can get exceedingly dangerous. Until now, going to get sushi and other Asian food was more of an event that we did on special occasions. That has come to an end.
Enter the Nanami Sushi Bar & Grill. A few months ago, Nanami magically appeared in a small strip mall, along Brodie Lane, that I cruise by every weekday whilst on the way home from work.
Curiosity finally got the best of both of us and the most glorious spousal unit and I wandered in this afternoon for lunch.

These are Gyoza. Pork-filled and pan-fried, these little pot sticker kind of things are labeled as “dumblings” in the take-out menu. Dumbling or not, these are some of the tastiest I’ve had anywhere. We opened the meal with them and closed the meal with another order.

As I’ve certainly said before, one of the greatest things about doing this whole blogging thing is that every once in a while I get invited to soft-launch extravaganzas like the one held at Uchiko, Chef Tyson Cole‘s latest offering to Austin’s ever-popular restaurant scene.
The invitation was signed by Chef Cole himself, I swear it!

Still a little woozy from a five-and-a-half hour eating and drinking extravaganza from which I returned about 12 hours ago, I have to say I had a pretty good time last night. Perhaps it was the alcohol. Perhaps it was the company. Perhaps it was the excitement of getting an invite for free food at a soft-opening (a pre-opening dress rehearsal kind of thing) for El Arbol, Austin’s newest “mid-century classic Argentinean restaurant”. I’m betting it was a combination of the above.

The architecture of the place is simply fascinating. The multi-level, bright-white and red-accented patios are built around (and intertwined with) a magnificent live oak that spreads seemingly forever in all directions. There is lots of outdoor seating, which was good, because this Friday night soft-opening event was packed. We arrived on time for the stated 8pm seating and were told there would be a 45 minute wait unless we wanted to be seated out on the patio. Thankfully, they had a lot of space heaters cranked to ward off the chill of a damp winter evening.

The Buenos Aires Cafe‘s (south) location, at 2414 S. First Street, quietly nestles it between a large pawn shop and a liquor store. On our visit yesterday, it didn’t look like much either with it’s pale olive-green exterior and loose polyethylene flapping in the breeze, put there, I presume, to protect it’s outdoor seating area from the chilly temps mother nature has foisted upon us these past few weeks. As I pulled into the alleyway to find a parking spot, I glanced over at the most glorious one, wondering if she had lost her freaking mind. Even the couple we met there for lunch were eyeballing me and I had to admit, out loud, that if I was just walking down the street, I probably wouldn’t just stroll in here for a bite to eat.
Most glorious knew the pressure was on; this was her recommendation and I’m betting she thought I was going to be hyper-critical. However, I’ve had really good food in some really weird-looking places, some of which had bars on the doors, others had no doors at all (or even walls). We’ve been married for close to two decades and I’ve learned to trust her judgment (most of the time).

Coming off an unusually wicked week, I was ready for relaxing with friends, sharing a couple of bottles of wine, and dining upon some really great food. The Carillon seemed just the ticket. More so than the Carillon, it was the food creations of Chef Josh Watkins that I wanted my friends to experience.

By now, Chef Watkins is probably thinking that I am stalking him. I took a great cooking class from him at Central Market, we’ve met up at numerous events (Big Reds & Bubbles, Chefs Under Fire, etc), and I even introduced him to my most glorious mother-in-law on Thanksgiving Day where I somehow got roped into committing to cooking a dinner for him (no pressure there) at some point in the near future.

A long-time friend called me last weekend while the most glorious spousal unit and I were down in San Marcos, TX — home of more outlet stores than one city should have — doing some rainy-day birthday shopping. It was about two in the p.m. and I had just emerged from Johnny Rockets and was standing in front of the Pottery Barn, dodging large water droplets running in rivulets off the side of the building. It was a very gray day. Pulling my automatic (wireless communication device) from my shoulder holster, I looked up and glanced across the mist-laden expanse of rubber and steel watching other brain-dead shoppers run through the crying sky as though they might melt if the tears hit them. It was a ballet of sorts, thoroughly ungraceful. Chuckling out loud, I suddenly noticed the heels of my feet were burning intensely; we’d been wandering around for nearly three and a half hours. Noticing the caller id, I answered: “Hello sir!”
As it turned out, we were being invited to dinner. We were to meet up at a new Brasserie in a not so new location: East Austin.

It’s been nearly two years since I last wrote about Trattoria Lisina. In fact, I think it was the fourth post on the Alcoholian (the Alcoholian launched 2 years ago today). Time flies and things change. The facility has grown (as have the plantings in the large flower garden) and the food has gotten better. The Mandola Winery (next to the restaurant) is five years old and they are beginning to use their own grapes in some of their wines.

I really loved the wide open porch that used to be in front of the restaurant located just outside the booming metropolis that is Driftwood, TX. Apparently, the hot Texas summers caused the Mandola’s to enclose the vast outdoor expanse and I can’t say it was a bad plan (though I do miss the big porch). The work was finished nicely and the views of the vineyard and hills beyond the large windows are still relatively unobstructed.

Even before we arrived at Fabi + Rosi I’d expected something just a little different.
You see, great friend and fellow gastronome, BigDMcC, had been talking up the place for several days. He’d told me about the quality of the food along with the totally reasonable pricing. My expectations were pretty high.

We walked into the non-descript smallish-looking house located just north of Lake Austin Boulevard at 509 Hearn and I immediately noted the elegant simplicity of the dining areas.

Last Sunday (June 21) while dining at Fino, a small group of us decided that we’d hit Garrido’s this weekend. What we didn’t know at the time was that the restaurant located at 360 Nueces was going to get a large favorable write-up in the Austin American Stateman three days later. I thought that getting into the place at 1pm Sunday (June 28) would be next to impossible.

Lucky for us, we met up at the bar and after a few minutes, were led to our table.

Every once in a while you meet a chef that has that rare combination of superb cooking skills and presence. Sure, when chefs are involved there is always the love of the craft, but to have a boundless energy and excitement combined with the rest of it, then you’ve really got something.
It doesn’t hurt that at the ripe old age of 23 he appeared on Iron Chef America and worked as Exec Chef David Bull’s Chef de Cuisine at the Driskill Grill. When Bull left the Driskill in 2007 to start up Bolla at the Stoneleigh in Dallas, Chef Watkins took over as Executive Chef and earned it another five star rating.
So, over the past year or so, Chef Watkins has been the Executive Chef at The University of Texas at Austin’s AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center (wow, what a mouthful that is) and oversees all of it’s culinary programs: The Carillon (signature restaurant), Tejas (conference dining), Gabriel’s Cafe, the OneTwenty5 Cafe, all banquet and catering functions, and UTs Blanton Cafe at the Blanton Museum of Art. In his spare time, he juggles kitchen knives whilst riding a unicycle and breathing fire (I made up that last bit).
Oddly enough, he actually cooks, too!

So first of all, this is our first post for the Alcoholian, and we are so excited to be a part of it! Although we could never match johngl’s humor and wit, we will do our best! Last night’s dinner at Wink was just too amazing not to share.
For those of you who don’t know (which almost brings a tear to my eye!), Wink Restaurant is one of the greatest treasures of Austin, located at 1014 North Lamar. The menu changes EVERYDAY, depending on what is fresh and available from Texas farms, foragers, gardens, and ranches. My husband and I frequent Wink, knowing that we’ll be blown away each and every time. Last night proved to be nothing but delicious, maybe even qualifying as one of the best ever at Wink! It is always a joy to consume a meal in which all ingredients of each course complement each other as masterfully as our menu last night (hence the title of this post). Enough rambling? Ready for the food?? Drum roll..here we go…

When I was the tender age of 19, I discovered an oyster bar called Barnacle Bill’s. They served buckets of oysters (6 dozen per bucket) for $6.95. A pitcher of beer was even less than that. They had a slogan:
Only one thing tastes better than an oyster
and you don’t eat it on a cracker
I wore their t-shirts proudly, even after Barnacle Bill’s closed down and became Calico Jack’s. I miss those days. Life was a lot simpler then — no cell phones, no computers, not even MTV. You actually had to talk to people face to face most of the time.
Where was I?
Oh, yeah. Oysters.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected to find oysters of this size, this density, and this full of flavor in li’l ol’ Austin, TX.

It’s not often that you see these words emblazoned across the menu at a fine restaurant:
Welcome! Tonight will be our only practice service before we open on Monday. We request that each person order at least 3 courses, including dessert and that each table avoid duplicating orders when possible. Thank you.
But that is exactly how we were greeted at the Friends & Family Dinner offered Saturday evening at the new location of Zoot. With our party of eight, we were certainly going to put them through their paces.
These were just some of the appetizers! (Hover over each pane for a description and click for a larger view. Come on! Do it! You know you want to!)
